Thomas Sweet
Thomas Sweet sits on the intersection of P and Wisconsin in the quieter section of Washington’s Georgetown. Wisconsin Avenue doesn’t see the same foot traffic as M street, but Thomas Sweet always has a line out the door. Sometimes, those lines include presidents.
Though Thomas Sweet is now a DC institution, it actually got its start in New Jersey in 1979, when the first location opened in Princeton. In fact, the DC shop is the only one outside of New Jersey; the other four are in Princeton, Montgomery, and New Brunswick.
There are over 20 flavors of icecream, at least six frozen yogurt flavors, and endless toppings. My go-to is coffee and mint chocolate chip ice cream with Heath Bar bits and hot chocolate fudge. Mmmm. Their dipped cones are excellent, and their specialty is something called a blend-in, which I think is just a sundae with all the toppings mixed into the ice cream.
